Intro
Getting started with a versatile hunting dog can feel overwhelming — new terms, training methods, and testing systems. The good news? You don’t have to figure it out alone. The New England Seacoast NAVHDA chapter is built around mentorship, encouragement, and learning together.

Whether you have a brand-new puppy or an older dog you’d like to develop, we welcome beginners and are happy to help you get started.
What is NAVHDA? 
NAVHDA (North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association) is an organization dedicated to promoting and improving versatile hunting dogs. These are dogs that can track, point, retrieve on land and water, and work closely with their handlers in the field.
NAVHDA focuses on:
  • Developing natural ability in young dogs
  • Encouraging cooperative, well-rounded hunting companions
  • Providing a supportive system of training and testing
You do not have to be an expert — many of our members joined with their very first hunting dog.
What kind of dogs participate?
NAVHDA is designed for versatile breeds such as:
  • German Shorthaired Pointers
  • Wirehaired Pointing Griffons
  • Pudelpointers
  • Vizslas
  • Weimaraners
    …and many others.

What Happens at a Training Day?
​Training days are relaxed, hands-on learning opportunities. You’ll work directly with experienced members who can help you and your dog build skills step by step.
You might see:
  • Field search and bird work
  • Water retrieves
  • Tracking exercises
  • Obedience and handling guidance
No one expects perfection — training days are about progress and learning.

Do I Need Experience?
Not at all. Beginners are welcome. Many members start with:
  • A new puppy
  • A young dog with no bird experience
  • A dog they simply want to enjoy outdoors with more
